St Mary's Newsletter List Ascension Day News

From the Provost
Dear
Just a quick e-mail to bring to a few things to your notice, which fall within the next few weeks.
best regards
KELVIN
- Don't forget that today (Thursday 13 May 2010) is Ascension Day. There will be a special service tonight at 7.30 pm. Bishop Gregor is coming; the first opportunity for him to celebrate the Eucharist with the Cathedral congregation since he was consecrated. The music at the service will be Haydn's Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis De Deo (which is also known as the Little Organ Mass).
- Pentecost falls this year on 23 May 2010. Last year at Pentecost the invitation was given to everyone to pray the Lord's Prayer in their own language, in response to the Pentecost story, where people from all over the known world were gathered in Jerusalem and everyone heard the good news about Jesus in their own tongue. This seems to have been something that people enjoyed and will be repeated again this year. It has also been suggested that this would be a good day for people to wear any national dress. Anyone with anything appropriate to wear to help us celebrate the coming together of the whole world is welcome to do so on this day. The 1030 service will include two baptisms.
- Also on Pentecost, the Provost will be preaching at a special service in Edinburgh billed as "Praying for an Inclusive Church". This takes place at 3pm in St. George’s West Parish Church, Shandwick Place, Edinburgh and is being held during Assembly Week of the Church of Scotland. The service is organised by Affirmation Scotland, a group which has sprung up within the Church of Scotland which describes itself as follows: "We specifically seek the affirmation and dignity of lesbian and gay Christians within the church, but we also seek a progressive Church in a wider theological sphere, inspired by the Spirit of God, that is semper reformanda – always reforming, always in accordance with a critical understanding of the Word of God." All are welcome at this service.
- The Diocesan Church in Society Group is organising a day looking at the way environmental issues affect faith. It is called A Greener Faith. A pdf poster for this event is available by clicking here. If you are interested, please contact the person who is organising the event (The Dean, the Very Rev Ian Barcroft) directly.
