It is being sent out a couple of days early to highlight the first two items, the concert tonight (Friday) for Haiti and the congregational social evening tomorrow.</p> <p> </p> <p>With best regards</p> <p>KELVIN The Very Rev Kelvin Holdsworth, Provost and Rector</p> <hr /> <p> </p> <h3>Haiti Relief</h3> <p>Special Concert in St Mary's today - Friday 29 January 2010 at 7.30 pm</p> <p>Gusztáv Fenyö will give a concert of piano favourites in aid of Haiti – including music by Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Joplin, Piazzolla & Gershwin - in St Mary’s Cathedral on Friday January 29th at 7.30 p.m. All proceeds to Action Aid. Children can sit on cushions in front of front pews - bring comfy cushions! Tickets £10 at door and donations welcome.</p> <p> </p> <h3>Our Revolting History Past</h3> <p> </p> <p>The early history of this congregation has been kept pretty vague for more than two centuries. Roger Edwards has been trawling through early records, and will explain his unexpected findings at a social evening in the Synod Hall on Saturday 30th January at 7.30 pm. All are welcome.</p> <p> </p> <h3>Election of a New Bishop</h3> <p>The Very Rev Dr Gregor Duncan was elected as our new bishop at an Electoral Synod which was held in St Mary's on 16 January.</p> <p>The consecration will be held in St Mary's though the date is as yet unknown. It is likely that there will be two events, the Consecration itself to which civic and ecclesiastical guests are invited and then a further event for members of the diocese.</p> <h3>List of Daily Bible Readings</h3> <p>Last month, the Provost published online a list of Daily Bible readings and made it <font size="3"><a id="lvr1" href="http://www.thurible.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/Daily-Prayer-Calendar-2010.pdf" title="is now available online"><span style="font-size: medium;">available online</span></a></font><span style="font-size: medium;">. A printed copy is now available at the back of the Cathedral. Please take one if you would like one. If you have any trouble working out how to use it, please ask any member of the clergy.</span></p> <h3>Young Church</h3> <p>The Young Church schedule for the next few weeks is as follows:</p> <p>31 Jan - Clergy contact day - Sacristy Safari with the Provost</p> <p>7 Feb - Altogether Sunday - young people worship with parents in churchp</p> <p>14 Feb - holiday weekend</p> <p>21 Feb - Singing games with members of the choir</p> <p>28 Feb - Exploring the church year (Lent session)</p> <p>7 March - Play based learning</p> <p><br /> On Sundays when the Young Church meets in the Synod Hall, children make their way there during the Psalm and come back into Church for the Peace.</p> <p> </p> <p>If you have children or grandchildren between the ages of 3/4 to 11 and are interested in them coming along, please look out for the flyers at the back of the church.</p> <p> </p> <h3> </h3> <p> </p> <h3><font size="3">Lent Devotions</font></h3> <p> </p> <p><font size="3">Ash Wednesday is on 17 February and every member of the congregation is encouraged to come to one of the services so that the whole congregation can begin this period of preparation for Easter together. Services will be at 12.30 pm and 7.30 pm. <br /> <br /> There will be Lentan devotions on the Fridays in Lent at 6.30 pm.<br /> On 19th, 26th February, 5th, 12th, 26th March these will take the form of a Plainsong Eucharist followed by Sung Compline. On 19 March, St Joseph's Day will be marked with Choral Evensong sung by a choir from RSAMD. <br /> Good Friday falls on 2 April 2010 and the evening devotion on that day will be Stainer's Cruxifiction, sung by the Cathedral Choir at 7.30 pm. The preacher for the Three Hours from 12 noon until 3 pm will be the Rev Anne Thomlinson.</font></p> <h3>Sponsored Swim for Haiti</h3> <p><font size="3">Steve Marshall is swimming to raise money for Haiti. He aims to complete the equivalent of a channel swim (23.69 miles) by 21 March 2010. Its called Inspires Online and will be a monthly news bulletin. It will be possible to sign up for that news service from Saturday 30 January 2010 at <a id="gmga" href="http://www.inspires.org.uk/" title="www.inspires.org.uk">www.inspires.org.uk</a></font></p> <h3>Festivals and Commemorations</h3> <p><font size="3">The Eucharist will be celebrated to mark the following festival days:</font></p> <p><font size="3">2 Feburary 2010 at 0930 - Candlemas<br /> </font></p> <p><font size="3">Ash Wednesday is on 17 February 2010 and there will be Eucharists at 12.30 pm and 7.30 pm. The evening service will be a Choral Eucharist.</font></p> <p><font size="3">Evensong on 31 January at 6.30 pm will be treated as a first evensong for Candlemastide and feature special music to mark the feast.<br /> </font></p> <h3>Royal School of Church Music</h3> <p><font size="3">The Scottish Voices of the Royal School of Church Music will be having a singing day at St Mary's on 20 February 2010. Details of the service to mark the end of this day will be published in the pew notes.</font></p> <h3>Book Group</h3> <p style="font-family: Verdana;"><font size="3">The Book Group is held in the Meeting Room and meets between 5.45 and 7pm (tea/coffee happens first, followed by discussion at 6pm).  Please feel free to join in when you can - new members are most welcome.  Dates and books are: on <i>4th February</i> ‘Moon Tiger’ by Penelope Lively; on <i>4</i><sup><i>th</i></sup><i> March</i> ‘Between the Monster and the Saint’ by Richard Holloway.  </font></p> <h3>Knitting Group</h3> <p><font size="3">The knitting group are currently <span class="il">knitting</span> hats for newborns in Malawi. The group meets in the Meeting Room (next to the Synod Hall door) once a month on a Monday from 7.30 to 9.30 pm. The purpose of the group is to provide a social network for knitters in the congregation, who should bring their own knitting project along. Tea and coffee available. New members welcome. It will look at one of the  readings set for the following Sunday. Tea and coffee available from 5.30. No previous knowledge or expertise required. Sung Compline will follow.</span></font></p> <h3>LGBT Group</h3> <p><font size="3">The LGBT Group meets on Monday 15 February 2010 at 7.30 pm for a film evening in the Synod Hall. The film will be "For the Bible Tells Me So" which features, amongst others, the Rt Rev Gene Robinson. This meeting is an open evening and all members of the congregation are invited to attend.</font></p> <h3>Poetry Evening</h3> <p style="font-family: Verdana;"><font size="3">Next meeting 18<sup>th</sup> February 2010 in the meeting room - Susan Anthony is the contact person for this group at: <a target="_blank" href="mailto:okediadi@hotmail.co.uk%20/">okediadi@hotmail.co.uk /</a></font><font size="3"> 0141 339 0224 The choice of poems is taken in turn by those attending. Tea and coffee available from 5.30.</font></p> <h3 style="font-family: Verdana;"><font size="3">External Events</font></h3> <p><font size="3"><b>The Age of Stupid</b> - There will be a special showing of the acclaimed film The Age of Stupid (released in March 2009 and starring Pete Postlethwaite) at the G12 cinema (Gilmorehill building, eastern end of University Avenue) at 7.30pm on Thursday 18 February. This event is organised jointly by the Wellington Justice and Peace Group and the World Development Movement. There will be a short introduction by Liz Murray, WDM Scotland’s head of campaigns and networks, and a brief discussion afterwards for those who wish to stay. The G12 bar will be open. The Christmas Season has been an exciting one to share in. My personal thanks to all those who helped to make the special services that we have had such a success. <br /> <br /> With all good wishes for the New Year.<br /> </span> <p><span style="font-size: medium;">With best regards</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: medium;">KELVIN</span></p> <hr /> <h3>New Year's Day</h3> <font size="3">There will be a New Year's Day service at 11 am on 1 January 2010. New Year's Day is also a Feast Day - the Feast of the Holy Name, when we remember Jesus being named by his parents.<br /> The service will be a modern language (1982) Eucharist with some hymns and a simple communion setting.</font><br /> <h3>New Year Resolution - Read the Bible</h3> <p><font size="3">People sometimes want to start the New Year with a resolution to have a go at regular Bible reading. A list of readings (called a Lectionary) is published by the Church for exactly this purpose. The Lectionary for Daily Prayer readings (ie the one used at Morning Prayer in St Mary's) <a id="lvr1" href="http://www.thurible.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/Daily-Prayer-Calendar-2010.pdf" title="is now available online">is now available online</a>. (If you spot any mistakes in it, please let the Provost know). Morning and Evening readings are provided for festivals and three readings are provided for normal days. One way of spreading the readings out is to read the Old Testament and Gospel reading provided in the morning and the New Testament and the Gospel (again) in the evening.</font> <font size="3">Note that every member of the clergy enjoys talking with people about finding a regular pattern of reading the Bible.</font></p> <h3>Epiphany</h3> <font size="3">Epiphany will be celebrated at the services on Sunday 3 January and then again at the 11 am service on 6 January.</font> <h3>Election of a New Bishop</h3> <font size="3">The Electoral Synod will meet the three candidates who are nominated for the post of Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway in St Margaret's Church, Newlands on 9 January 2010. The Electoral Synod will convene in St Mary's Cathedral one week later on Saturday 16 January 2010 for the election. These sessions are closed to everyone except the electors. Following weeks’ activities will have play based sessions and time spent with a member of the clergy. All these sessions will be repeated through the year. Acting on this led to my first BPF Conference, a turning point which proved a life-transforming experience. The 2010 Conference in St. Andrews has President, Dr. Jim O’Donoghue, as main speaker, and his theme is <i>‘Love and Healing</i>. <i>The Spirituality of Counselling & Pastoral Care.’</i>  Dr. O’Donoghue has founded and directed four community Counselling Therapeutic Centres in Ireland, and been a visiting lecturer in two universities. Places are limited, so you’re wise to book early… don’t say you weren’t warned! St Mary's Newsletter List: Jazz Mass and other Music News

It is the last week that the choir will be singing at St Mary's before their well earned summer break. In the morning there will be a Jazz Mass, featuring the whole choir of adults and trebles, accompanied by jazz pianist, bass and drums. The service starts at 1030 am and will feature the Little Jazz Mass by Bob Chilcott. In the evening at 6.30 pm there is a special Choral Evensong to mark the first evensong of the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, which falls on Monday. The music will include the Gloucester Service settings of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis by Herbert Howells.</p> <p> </p> <p>Frikki Walker, our Director of Music has put together a music newsletter which gives details of some of the things that the choir and cathedral musicians have been up to recently and looking ahead to what is coming up next year. Also included are details of the awards that the trebles have been working towards. One of the features of the story that we celebrate on this day (from Acts 2) is that everyone heard the deeds of God in their own language. St Mary's is a place where there are many languages spoken by the congregation (eg Welsh, Swedish, Ebo, Mandarin, English etc). One of the topics on the agenda is the Cathedral's work with young people. A discussion paper was circulated to those working with young people a number of week's ago. Any member of the congregation who wishes to comment on these suggestions or any other aspect of the Cathedral's work amongst young people is invited to do so by e-mailing the Lay Rep, Anne Jones on annepjones@hotmail.com. Comments on this aspect of our life together can be made at any time. Comments for consideration by the Vestry should be made before next Monday.<br /> <br /> <br /> <strong>Interim Youth Report for discussion</strong><br /> <br /> A small review group (Provost, Anne Jones and Paul Holloway) has been discussing youth work in St Mary's and the following report has been given to Vestry members for discussion</p> <ul> <li>The congregation identifies, appoints and trains several designated people to pastorally support families with children.</li> <li>Information for parents to be produced to help them introduce their children to the faith in the context of the church service. [How to be in church with children] Opportunities to be provided for parents to meet with a small group, including Kelvin, for discussion and explanation. Information to be posted on the website.</li> <li>The usual practice in this church follows Canon law in welcoming to communion children who have been baptised.  An approach should be made to families with a view to bringing children into communion who are not already communicants.</li> <li>Further inclusion of children and young people in Sunday worship e.g. stewarding, interceding, reading, coffee.</li> <li>The system of Christian Education' Godly Play' to be implemented in the Cathedral for children of primary school age.</li> <li>Group leaders to attend appropriate training courses and have a break from duties after 5 years.</li> <li>Develop ways to convey the experiences and drama of Holy Week to younger members.</li> <li>There should be an audio link from church to Synod Hall and Meeting Room.</li> <li>Young people of secondary school age to be in church for services.</li> <li>Further conversation with Suet Teo Winter and Claire Johnson about changing models of ministry with young people.</li> <li>The church supports Diocesan and Provincial initiatives and we recommend that the only summer residential opportunities that we support is the Glen Youth Week organised by the SEC.</li> <li>At least one young person from the congregation to go to the Provincial Conference in September. [UPDATE - note that the conference is now cancelled]</li> <li>We commend the good work of the Treble Choir in attracting so many young people and recommend a conversation takes place with Frikki Walker on how to integrate faith development in the "Voice of Life'</li> <li>This report has been drawn up after conversations with adult leaders.  We would now be interested in hearing from parents and children and young people themselves in response to these recommendations.</li> </ul>

The full choir (adults and trebles) will be singing at this service.</p> <br /> <h2>St Andrews Day Lunchtime Service (1 Dec 2008)</h2> <p>There will be a Eucharist to mark St Andrew's Day on Monday 1 December at 1230. This is transferred from 30 November this year. (St Andrew's Day can never fall on a Sunday in the Calendar of the Scottish Episcopal Church as both Christ and King and Advent 1 have to be kept on Sundays.</p> <br /> <br /> <h2>Vestry Meeting</h2> <p>The first meeting of the new Vestry will be on Monday 8 December 2008 at 7.45 pm for 8 pm in the Synod Hall.</p> <br /> <h2>Congregational Consultation</h2> <p>A consultation document was launched at the Annual General Meeting. This is concerned with four areas which the Misison 21 group has identified as needing development. All suggestions are brought to the attention of the Provost. Recent suggestions have included the suggestion that these feedback mechanisms be advertised in the newsletter (implimented here and now!) and also that the music list be restored to the website. It will be a Sung Eucharist with full choir.<br /> First Sunday of Christmas - services at 0830 and 1030<br /> The days following Christmas Day are special commemorations (called the Comites Christi - the Companions of Christ) and these will be kept in full at St Mary's this year.</p> <p>There will be Eucharists at 0930 on the following days:</p> <br /> <p>26 December 2008 - St Stephen's Day (An ideal start to the day for anyone planning on a walk up a hill or a stomp through the park to clear away the cobwebs on Boxing Day)<br /> 27 December 2008 - St John the Evangelist<br /> 29 December 2008 - Holy Innocents (Sometimes people who have particular sad memories at Christmastide find it appropriate to come to this service. It is also a service when we pray for those who are the victims of sudden violence or terrorism).</p> <p>Note that there will be no Evensong on 28 December.</p> <br /> <h2>New Ordinand</h2> <p><img src="http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/kevin1.jpg" alt="Kevin Francis. " /></p> <p>St Mary's has a new ordinand in the congregation. Kevin Francis has been selected for training to become a priest. Kevin's training is being done through a diocesan programme and the Theological Institute of the Scottish Episcopal Church (TISEC) and will last approximately 2 years.</p> <h2>World AIDS Day Service</h2> <p>The World AIDS Day Service takes place in St Mary's on Monday 1 December 2008 at 7 pm. This service has been put together by David Cowan of the Terrrance Higgins Trust. All Welcome.</p> <p>Beaded brooches of the AIDS Ribbon are available after the 1030 am service on 20 November as a reminder to pray for those who suffer, directly and indirectly, from this disease. They are made in South Africa by AIDS projects and are a simple but effective way to express solidarity with those who live daily with HIV and those friends and family who support them.</p> <br /> <h2>World AIDS Day CD of African Songs</h2> <p class="MsoBodyText3">Waverley Care have produced a CD of songs to mark World AIDS Day. 15 volunteers, service users and staff from Waverley Care’s African Health projects came together to sing these joyful songs from their childhoods in Africa. None of them were ‘professional’ singers, and they discovered songs in common and taught each other new songs too. The songs on this CD were recorded live at Solas in Edinburgh. All proceeds from this community project will be shared between HIV projects in Scotland and Malawi. CDs can be purchased at St Mary's on a Sunday.</p> <h2 class="MsoBodyText3">An Advent Exercise?</h2> <p class="MsoBodyText3"><i>John Riches writes: </i>This advent, to remind us of the value and gift of water, how about this? Put 2 jamjars by your sink, one with small coins and one empty. Every time you use water put a coin in the second jar. On the fourth Sunday of Advent, bring the coins to church. We'll send them to Wells for India.</p> <h2 class="MsoBodyText3"> </h2> <h2>Office Closure</h2> <p>The office will be unstaffed (or rudimentarily staffed) on the following Tuesdays & Wednesdays: 2, 3, 9, 10, 16 & 17 December.</p> <h2>Knitting Group</h2> <p>“There will be a Knitting Group....” ....which duly met for the first time on the evening of Monday, 10th November 08. We will be continuing – from December 08 through to March 09 – on the second Monday of each month from 7.30 to 9.30 pm, currently in the Meeting Room, which is next to the Synod Hall door. The purpose of the group is to provide a social network for knitters in the congregation, members bringing their own knitting project along. The atmosphere is very informal. Expertise on the first night ranged from a very experienced knitter who could probably knit anything in any colour and style, standing on her head without a pattern, to another member whose last piece of knitting was left on a No 33 bus in Aberdeen in 1969. Do come along – interest and enthusiasm are the only requirements! Tea and coffee will be provided and new members are welcome. It is the Feast of Christ the King and the 1030 service on Sunday morning will include a Baptism. In the evening there is a special Choral Evensong. It is our custom for the choir to have a rousing sing on this, the last Sunday of the Church year and this year will be no exception. Popular choral music including Zadok the Priest will be sung during this service, at which we will be joined by friends from around the diocese. This is by way of celebrating the 10th anniversary of Bishop Idris's consecration as Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway.</p> <p>After Evensong, there will be a Cathedral Ceilidh with dancing to the Jiggers Ceilidh Band. No tickets are required for this one - it is open to all. There was considerable interest from the media which produced universally positive comment about the visit in the press and a brief clip on BBC television news. Many thanks to all those who helped make this service a success including servers and the members of the choir who went the extra mile by agreeing to sing during their well earned summer break.<br /> <h3>Lambeth Reflections from Bishop Idris</h3> “In one sense the Anglican Communion is dead,” Bishop Idris told the September meeting of Diocesan Council in his report on the Lambeth Conference. <p>“By this I mean that what we have now, and shall have in the future will be very different from concepts of communion derived trom earlier decades,” he explained. “After death comes resurrection, so I am anticipating that a new way of relating across and within the Communion is needed and is likely to begin to emerge in the next few years. Most of us agreed that the idea of a ‘quick fix’ - though it still appealed to others - is not a realistic expectation. What is required in return is a large measure of patience and also the courage to continue to layout where we feel the communion should be going. Musicians were particularly busy with an excellent concert on the Saturday evening and full choral services on the Sunday. Choral Evensong was sung in the presence of the Bishop and members of the Cathedral Chapter. The Cathedral Chapter is made up of the Bishop, the Dean and the Provost and 8 members of the clergy who are alternately nominated by the Bishop and the Clergy of the diocese. The Chapter was constituted 100 years ago and it is this event which we have been celebrating. Chapter members are also known as the Canons of the Cathedral.</p> <p> </p> <p>The next diocesan service will be a special Choral Evensong to mark 10 years since Bishop Idris was consecrated as the Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway. This will take place on 23 November 2008 at 6.30 pm.</p> <p> </p> <h3>Journey in Faith</h3> <p>It is hoped that St Mary's will begin to host Journey in Faith courses in the autumn though no dates have yet been set. These are courses in basic Christian education which are offered by the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway. It is expected that an initial basic six week course will take place, possibly on a Wednesday evening. Final arrangements are still to be put in place. If you are interested, please e-mail Alistair Fulton, the office manager, and further details will be sent out when definite arrangements have been made.</p> <h3>Stations of Grace - All Saints and All Souls</h3> <p>The first weekend in November is looking as though it will be a very exciting one. For three days, the Cathedral will be open and there will be displays which have been commissioned by each of the local churches in the West End ACTS group. Each church has been asked to commission and artist to install a "Station of Grace".</p> <p> </p> <p>On the Saturday during the day, the Rev Richard Coles will be leading a workshop on the themes arising out of our celebration of All Saints and All Souls called "The Best of Times, the Worst of Times". This would be a good introduction to this important celebration for anyone who has joined the congregation who does not have an Anglican background or for anyone wanting to think about the themes of life and death that are emphasised at this time of year. Richard Coles is and Anglican priest based in London who regularly broadcasts on BBC Radio and Television about arts and religious topics. Before being ordained he was a musician, and lists one of his greatest moments as having a number one hit record. (He was one half of the <i>Communards</i>).</p> <p> </p> <p>On the Saturday evening, there will be a Big Sing led by John Bell and James MacMillan.</p> <p>On the Sunday, we will celebrate All Saints in the morning with the Rev Richard Coles as the preacher. In the evening, there will be the usual Sung Requiem for All Souls. The morning service will concentrate on All Saints whilst the evening service will be a Sung Requiem.</p> <h3>LGBT Group</h3> <p>The LGBT Group meets on 15 September 2008 at 8 pm for a discussion evening led by the Provost. </p> <h3>Bible Study & Compline</h3> <p>The Contextual Bible Study and the Compline groups are both changing the day they meet from October. Both groups will now meet on the second Tuesday in the Month. Bible Study from 6 pm. Compline at 7.30 pm. Bible Study details from the Rev John Riches. Compline details from Gail Smith. Both can be contacted via the Cathedral office. The first date on which both these groups will meet is 14 October.</p> <h3>Eco Congregation</h3> The next meeting of the Eco Congregation group is 21 September after the 1030 Sung Eucharist.<br /> <h3>Book Group</h3> <p>The next meeting will be on Thursday 2 October 2008. Meetings take place at 6 pm in the Meeting Room, which is next to the Synod Hall door. Tea and coffee available from 5.30.</p> <h3>Poetry Evening</h3> <p>The next Poetry Evening will be on 18 September (and on the third Thursday of each month). Works ranging from the Song of Solomon to Ian Crichton Smith are discussed. The choice of poems is taken in turn by those attending. Meetings take place at 6 pm in the Meeting Room, which is next to the Synod Hall door. West End ACTS is the local ecumenical network affiliated to Action for Churches together in Scotland. To win a prize, the crossword needs to be completed and returned by 30 September 2008.</li> </ul> <ul> <li><b>Jesus and Other Faiths</b> — Thursday, September 25, 2008 —10:30-3:00 - A study day in the “Christianity and Scotland’s Other Faiths” series to be held in Scottish Churches’ House, Dunblane, led by the Convener of CAIRS, Sr Isabel Smyth, and Inter Faith Education Officer, Andrew Sarle. What can we learn from reflecting on Jesus as a rabbi, prophet, guru and brother of the Buddha? Many recent Buddhist writings have pictured Jesus as an enlightened teacher. Some Hindus elevate the divine status of Jesus to that of an "avatar" (a ‘descent’ of God). Muslims have long claimed that Jesus was really a prophet of Islam, calling all people to submission to God. And Jews have always claimed Jesus as a Jew, albeit a wayward one. We will be covering the links which we in Glasgow and Galloway have around the world, funding of projects, literacy, parenting and family life.
