        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h2&#62;From the Provost&#60;/h2&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Dear &#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Please find below the newsletter from St Mary's for February. It is being sent out a couple of days early to highlight the first two items, the concert tonight (Friday) for Haiti and the congregational social evening tomorrow.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;With best regards&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;KELVIN         The Very Rev Kelvin Holdsworth, Provost and Rector&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;hr /&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Haiti Relief&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Special Concert in St Mary's today - Friday 29 January 2010 at 7.30 pm&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Guszt&#38;aacute;v Feny&#38;ouml; will give a concert of piano favourites in aid of Haiti &#38;ndash; including music by Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Joplin, Piazzolla &#38;amp; Gershwin - in St Mary&#38;rsquo;s Cathedral on Friday January 29th at 7.30 p.m. All proceeds to Action Aid. Children can sit on cushions in front of front pews - bring comfy cushions! Tickets &#38;pound;10 at door and donations welcome.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Our Revolting History Past&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The early history of this congregation has been kept pretty vague for more than two centuries. Roger Edwards has been trawling through early records, and will explain his unexpected findings at a social evening in the Synod Hall on Saturday 30th January at 7.30 pm. All are welcome.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Election of a New Bishop&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The Very Rev Dr Gregor Duncan was elected as our new bishop at an Electoral Synod which was held in St Mary's on 16 January.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The consecration will be held in St Mary's though the date is as yet unknown. It is likely that there will be two events, the Consecration itself to which civic and ecclesiastical guests are invited and then a further event for members of the diocese.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;List of Daily Bible Readings&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Last month, the Provost published online a list of Daily Bible readings and made it &#60;font size=&#34;3&#34;&#62;&#60;a id=&#34;lvr1&#34; href=&#34;http://www.thurible.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/Daily-Prayer-Calendar-2010.pdf&#34; title=&#34;is now available online&#34;&#62;&#60;span style=&#34;font-size: medium;&#34;&#62;available online&#60;/span&#62;&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/font&#62;&#60;span style=&#34;font-size: medium;&#34;&#62;. A printed copy is now available at the back of the Cathedral. Please take one if you would like one. If you have any trouble working out how to use it, please ask any member of the clergy.&#60;/span&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Young Church&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The Young Church schedule for the next few weeks is as follows:&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;31 Jan - Clergy contact day - Sacristy Safari with the Provost&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;7 Feb - Altogether Sunday - young people worship with parents in churchp&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;14 Feb - holiday weekend&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;21 Feb - Singing games with members of the choir&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;28 Feb - Exploring the church year (Lent session)&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;7 March - Play based learning&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
        On Sundays when the Young Church meets in the Synod Hall, children make their way there during the Psalm and come back into Church for the Peace.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;If you  have children or grandchildren between the ages of 3/4 to 11 and are  interested in them coming along, please look out for the flyers at the  back of the church.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/h3&#62;

        &#60;p&#62;&#60;font size=&#34;3&#34;&#62;Ash Wednesday is on 17 February and every member of the congregation is encouraged to come to one of the services so that the whole congregation can begin this period of preparation for Easter together.         Good Friday falls on 2 April 2010 and the evening devotion on that day will be Stainer's Cruxifiction, sung by the Cathedral Choir at 7.30 pm. The preacher for the Three Hours from 12 noon until 3 pm will be the Rev Anne Thomlinson.&#60;/font&#62;&#60;/p&#62;

        &#60;h2&#62;From the Provost&#60;/h2&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#60;span style=&#34;font-size: medium;&#34;&#62;Dear &#60;/span&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;span style=&#34;font-size: medium;&#34;&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
        You'll find some St Mary's news for the new year below. The Christmas Season has been an exciting one to share in. My personal thanks to all those who helped to make the special services that we have had such a success. &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        With all good wishes for the New Year.&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;/span&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#60;span style=&#34;font-size: medium;&#34;&#62;With best regards&#60;/span&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#60;span style=&#34;font-size: medium;&#34;&#62;KELVIN&#60;/span&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;hr /&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;New Year's Day&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;font size=&#34;3&#34;&#62;There will be a New Year's Day service at 11 am on 1 January 2010. New Year's Day is also a Feast Day - the Feast of the Holy Name, when we remember Jesus being named by his parents.&#60;br /&#62;
        The service will be a modern language (1982) Eucharist with some hymns and a simple communion setting.&#60;/font&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;New Year Resolution - Read the Bible&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#60;font size=&#34;3&#34;&#62;People sometimes want to start the New Year with a resolution to have a go at regular Bible reading. A list of readings (called a Lectionary) is published by the Church for exactly this purpose. The Lectionary for Daily Prayer readings (ie the one used at Morning Prayer in St Mary's) &#60;a id=&#34;lvr1&#34; href=&#34;http://www.thurible.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/Daily-Prayer-Calendar-2010.pdf&#34; title=&#34;is now available online&#34;&#62;is now available online&#60;/a&#62;. (If you spot any mistakes in it, please let the Provost know). Morning and Evening readings are provided for festivals and three readings are provided for normal days. One way of spreading the readings out is to read the Old Testament and Gospel reading provided in the morning and the New Testament and the Gospel (again) in the evening.&#60;/font&#62; &#60;font size=&#34;3&#34;&#62;Note that every member of the clergy enjoys talking with people about finding a regular pattern of reading the Bible.&#60;/font&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Epiphany&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;font size=&#34;3&#34;&#62;Epiphany will be celebrated at the services on Sunday 3 January and then again at the 11 am service on 6 January.&#60;/font&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Election of a New Bishop&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;font size=&#34;3&#34;&#62;The Electoral Synod will meet the three candidates who are nominated for the post of Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway in St Margaret's Church, Newlands on 9 January 2010. The Electoral Synod will convene in St Mary's Cathedral one week later on Saturday 16 January 2010 for the election. These sessions are closed to everyone except the electors. The Lay Rep (and consequently the elector) who represents St Mary's is Anne Jones. &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        The three candidates are:&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;/font&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#60;font size=&#34;3&#34;&#62;&#60;b&#62;The Venerable Dr John Applegate&#60;/b&#62;, (born 1956), Course Principal, Southern North West Training Partnership, Diocese of Manchester and part-time lecturer at the University of Manchester &#60;/font&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#60;font size=&#34;3&#34;&#62;&#60;b&#62;The Very Rev Dr Gregor Duncan&#60;/b&#62;, (born 1950), Rector of St Ninian&#38;rsquo;s Church, Pollokshields and Dean of the Diocese of Glasgow &#38;amp; Galloway &#60;/font&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#60;font size=&#34;3&#34;&#62;&#60;b&#62;The Rev Canon Dr Alison Peden&#60;/b&#62;, (born 1952), Rector of Holy Trinity Church, Stirling; Chaplain of Forth Valley College, Stirling and Canon of St Ninian&#38;rsquo;s Cathedral, Perth &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;/font&#62;&#60;/p&#62;

        &#60;p&#62;&#60;font size=&#34;3&#34;&#62;The process by which someone can be elected as a Bishop in the Scottish Episcopal Church is governed by Canon Law, specifically Canon 4.         &#60;p&#62;Dear &#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Just a reminder that we have some special music on this weekend. It is the last week that the choir will be singing at St&#38;nbsp;Mary's before their well earned summer break. In the morning there will be a Jazz Mass, featuring the whole choir of adults and trebles, accompanied by jazz pianist, bass and drums. The service starts at 1030 am and will feature the Little Jazz Mass by Bob Chilcott. In the evening at 6.30 pm there is a special Choral Evensong to mark the first evensong of the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, which falls on Monday. The music will include the Gloucester Service settings of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis by Herbert Howells.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Frikki Walker, our Director of Music has put together a music newsletter which gives details of some of the things that the choir and cathedral musicians have been up to recently and looking ahead to what is coming up next year. Also included are details of the awards that the trebles have been working towards. The newsletter is attached to this e-mail in pdf format and will be available in print format on Sunday in church.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;If you know anyone who would like to hear the special music we have on Sunday, especially the Jazz Mass, then do pass on an invitation to them.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Best regards&#60;/p&#62;

        &#60;p&#62;&#60;img src=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/wp-content/themes/mimbo2.2/images/header3.jpg&#34; alt=&#34;St Mary's Cathedral&#34; /&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Dear &#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Please find below several items of Cathedral News:&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Congratulations &#60;/strong&#62;- to members of the choir for completing another live BBC Radio 4 Broadcast this week.&#38;nbsp; Those who missed the Daily Service on Radio 4 led by John Bell and St Mary's Cathedral Choir on Monday can find it online until at least next Monday here: &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/realmedia/daily/mon.ram&#34;&#62;http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/realmedia/daily/mon.ram&#60;/a&#62; [You need a Real Player programme to hear this online broadcast].&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;strong&#62;Pentecost &#60;/strong&#62;- this coming Sunday is the Feast of Pentecost. One of the features of the story that we celebrate on this day (from Acts 2) is that everyone heard the deeds of God in their own language. St Mary's is a place where there are many languages spoken by the congregation (eg Welsh, Swedish, Ebo, Mandarin, English etc). Members of the congregation are invited to pray the Lord's Prayer in their own language on this day.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Diocesan News&#60;/strong&#62; - the latest copy of the Diocesan Newsletter can be downloaded here: &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/dns-a4-crc-june-09.pdf&#34;&#62;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/dns-a4-crc-june-09.pdf&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Work with Young People&#60;/strong&#62; - the Vestry next meets on Monday 1 June 2009. One of the topics on the agenda is the Cathedral's work with young people. A discussion paper was circulated to those working with young people a number of week's ago. The points raised in it can be found below. Any member of the congregation who wishes to comment on these suggestions or any other aspect of the Cathedral's work amongst young people is invited to do so by e-mailing the Lay Rep, Anne Jones on &#38;#97;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#110;&#38;#x65;&#38;#112;&#38;#x6A;&#38;#111;&#38;#110;&#38;#x65;&#38;#115;&#38;#64;&#38;#104;&#38;#x6F;&#38;#x74;&#38;#109;&#38;#x61;&#38;#105;&#38;#108;&#38;#x2E;&#38;#99;&#38;#111;&#38;#109;. Comments on this aspect of our life together can be made at any time. Comments for consideration by the Vestry should be made before next Monday.&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;strong&#62;Interim Youth Report for discussion&#60;/strong&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        A small review group (Provost, Anne Jones and Paul Holloway) has been discussing youth work in St Mary's and the following report has been given to Vestry members for discussion&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;ul&#62;
            &#60;li&#62;The congregation identifies, appoints and trains several designated people to pastorally support families with children.&#60;/li&#62;
            &#60;li&#62;Information for parents to be produced to help them introduce their children to the faith in the context of the church service. [How to be in church with children] Opportunities to be provided for parents to meet with a small group, including Kelvin, for discussion and explanation. Information to be posted on the website.&#60;/li&#62;
            &#60;li&#62;The usual practice in this church follows Canon law in welcoming to communion children who have been baptised.&#38;nbsp; An approach should be made to families with a view to bringing children into communion who are not already communicants.&#60;/li&#62;
            &#60;li&#62;Further inclusion of children and young people in Sunday worship e.g. stewarding, interceding, reading, coffee.&#60;/li&#62;
            &#60;li&#62;The system of Christian Education' Godly Play' to be implemented in the Cathedral for children of primary school age.&#60;/li&#62;
            &#60;li&#62;Group leaders to attend appropriate training courses and have a break from duties after 5 years.&#60;/li&#62;
            &#60;li&#62;Develop ways to convey the experiences and drama of Holy Week to younger members.&#60;/li&#62;
            &#60;li&#62;There should be an audio link from church to Synod Hall and Meeting Room.&#60;/li&#62;
            &#60;li&#62;Young people of secondary school age to be in church for services.&#60;/li&#62;
            &#60;li&#62;Further conversation with Suet Teo Winter and Claire Johnson about changing models of ministry with young people.&#60;/li&#62;
            &#60;li&#62;The church supports Diocesan and Provincial initiatives and we recommend that the only summer residential opportunities that we support is the Glen Youth Week organised by the SEC.&#60;/li&#62;
            &#60;li&#62;At least one young person from the congregation to go to the Provincial Conference in September. [UPDATE - note that the conference is now cancelled]&#60;/li&#62;
            &#60;li&#62;We commend the good work of the Treble Choir in attracting so many young people and recommend a conversation takes place with Frikki Walker on how to integrate faith development in the &#38;quot;Voice of Life'&#60;/li&#62;
            &#60;li&#62;This report has been drawn up after conversations with adult leaders.&#38;nbsp; We would now be interested in hearing from parents and children and young people themselves in response to these recommendations.&#60;/li&#62;
        &#60;/ul&#62;

		 <title>St Mary's Newsletter List - Radio Broadcast and Consultation</title>
		 <link>http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/newsletter/20090106094527/</link>
		 <description>

        &#60;p&#62;&#60;img src=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/wp-content/themes/mimbo2.2/images/header3.jpg&#34; alt=&#34;St Mary's Cathedral&#34; /&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;From the Provost&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Dear &#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;I am writing to everyone in the congregation at St Mary's with an invitation to come to a service which will be broadcast live from the Cathedral. &#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;On Sunday 18&#38;nbsp;January, the early service on that day will be a choral service of Morning Prayer and will be broadcast on Radio 4 at 0810.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;If you would like to be there, please make sure that you are seated by 0745.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;There will be breakfast after the service and it would be useful to know rough numbers of those attending. If you know you are going to be there (and are not in the choir, whose numbers will be counted seperately) then could you let Alistair Fulton in the office &#60;a href=&#34;javascript:location.href='mailto:'+String.fromCharCode(111,102,102,105,99,101,64,116,104,101,99,97,116,104,101,100,114,97,108,46,111,114,103,46,117,107)+'?subject=Sunday%20Morning%20Radio%20Broadcast'&#34;&#62;&#38;#111;&#38;#102;&#38;#x66;&#38;#x69;&#38;#x63;&#38;#x65;&#38;#64;&#38;#x74;&#38;#104;&#38;#x65;&#38;#x63;&#38;#x61;&#38;#x74;&#38;#x68;&#38;#x65;&#38;#100;&#38;#x72;&#38;#x61;&#38;#108;&#38;#x2E;&#38;#x6F;&#38;#114;&#38;#x67;&#38;#46;&#38;#x75;&#38;#107;&#60;/a&#62; or&#38;nbsp; 0141 339 6691 know. [Please reply during the week and not to Alistair in person on a Sunday, if you can]&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;I always find the broadcast services fun to do and one of the reasons that the BBC&#38;nbsp;like to come to St Mary's is that we can generally get a congregation out early in the morning for it.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Could I also remind you of the current consultation going on within the congregation. I've extended the deadline for replies to Sunday 11 January, so there is still time to reply, if you have not already done so. (And if you have already replied, many thanks).&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;I've attached a copy of the Consulation&#38;nbsp;Document to this e-mail as a pdf file and it is also available with a response form on the Cathedral website at:&#60;/p&#62;

        &#60;p&#62;You'll find below a newsletter with some general news about what is coming up at St Mary's over the coming month. &#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Inevitably, its a rather busy one!&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Best regards&#60;/p&#62;

        &#60;h2&#62;Congregational Consultation&#60;/h2&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;A consultation document was launched at the Annual General Meeting. This is concerned with four areas which the Misison 21 group has identified as needing development. The document can be found online at&#60;/p&#62;

        &#60;h2&#62;Suggestion Box&#60;/h2&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;There is a suggestion box facility on the cathedral website and a physical suggestion box located in the Synod Hall. All suggestions are brought to the attention of the Provost. Recent suggestions have included the suggestion that these feedback mechanisms be advertised in the newsletter (implimented here and now!) and also that the music list be restored to the website. (A provisional music list is now put online when it is available).&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;

        &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;h2&#62;Christmas Services&#60;/h2&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The Christmas Carol Service takes place on Sunday 21 December 2008 at 4.30 pm.&#60;br /&#62;
        Midnight Mass begins at 11.15 pm on 24 December 2008.&#60;br /&#62;
        The Christmas Day service will be at 1030 am on 25 December 2008. It will be a Sung Eucharist with full choir.&#60;br /&#62;
        First Sunday of Christmas - services at 0830 and 1030&#60;br /&#62;
        The days following Christmas Day are special commemorations (called the Comites Christi - the Companions of Christ) and these will be kept in full at St Mary's this year.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;There will be Eucharists at 0930 on the following days:&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;26 December 2008 - St Stephen's Day (An ideal start to the day for anyone planning on a walk up a hill or a stomp through the park to clear away the cobwebs on Boxing Day)&#60;br /&#62;
        27 December 2008 - St John the Evangelist&#60;br /&#62;
        29 December 2008 - Holy Innocents (Sometimes people who have particular sad memories at Christmastide find it appropriate to come to this service. It is also a service when we pray for those who are the victims of sudden violence or terrorism).&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Note that there will be no Evensong on 28 December.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;h2&#62;New Ordinand&#60;/h2&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#60;img src=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/kevin1.jpg&#34; alt=&#34;Kevin Francis. &#34; /&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;St Mary's has a new ordinand in the congregation. Kevin Francis has been selected for training to become a priest. Kevin's training is being done through a diocesan programme and the Theological Institute of the Scottish Episcopal Church (TISEC) and will last approximately 2 years.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h2&#62;World AIDS Day Service&#60;/h2&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The World AIDS Day Service takes place in St Mary's on Monday 1 December 2008 at 7 pm. This service has been put together by David Cowan of the Terrrance Higgins Trust. All Welcome.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Beaded brooches of the AIDS Ribbon are available after the 1030 am service on 20 November as a reminder to pray for those who suffer, directly and indirectly, from this disease. They are made in South Africa by AIDS projects and are a simple but effective way to express solidarity with those who live daily with HIV and those friends and family who support them.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;h2&#62;World AIDS Day CD of African Songs&#60;/h2&#62;
        &#60;p class=&#34;MsoBodyText3&#34;&#62;Waverley Care have produced a CD of songs to mark World AIDS Day. 15 volunteers, service users and staff from Waverley Care&#38;rsquo;s African Health projects came together to sing these joyful songs from their childhoods in Africa. None of them were &#38;lsquo;professional&#38;rsquo; singers, and they discovered songs in common and taught each other new songs too. The songs on this CD were recorded live at Solas in Edinburgh. All proceeds from this community project will be shared between HIV projects in Scotland and Malawi. CDs can be purchased at St Mary's on a Sunday.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h2 class=&#34;MsoBodyText3&#34;&#62;An Advent Exercise?&#60;/h2&#62;
        &#60;p class=&#34;MsoBodyText3&#34;&#62;&#60;i&#62;John Riches writes: &#60;/i&#62;This advent, to remind us of the value and gift of water, how about this? Put 2 jamjars by your sink, one with small coins and one empty. Every time you use water put a coin in the second jar. On the fourth Sunday of Advent, bring the coins to church. We'll send them to Wells for India.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h2 class=&#34;MsoBodyText3&#34;&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/h2&#62;
        &#60;h2&#62;Office Closure&#60;/h2&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The office will be unstaffed (or rudimentarily staffed) on the following Tuesdays &#38;amp; Wednesdays: 2, 3, 9, 10, 16 &#38;amp; 17 December.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h2&#62;Knitting Group&#60;/h2&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;ldquo;There will be a Knitting Group....&#38;rdquo; ....which duly met for the first time on the evening of Monday, 10th November 08. We will be continuing &#38;ndash; from December 08 through to March 09 &#38;ndash; on the second Monday of each month from 7.30 to 9.30 pm, currently in the Meeting Room, which is next to the Synod Hall door. The purpose of the group is to provide a social network for knitters in the congregation, members bringing their own knitting project along. The atmosphere is very informal. Expertise on the first night ranged from a very experienced knitter who could probably knit anything in any colour and style, standing on her head without a pattern, to another member whose last piece of knitting was left on a No 33 bus in Aberdeen in 1969. Do come along &#38;ndash; interest and enthusiasm are the only requirements! Tea and coffee will be provided and new members are welcome. There is a St Mary's Group on&#60;/p&#62;

        &#60;h3&#62;From the Provost&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Dear &#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;This e-mail is primarily to point you towards a copy of the papers for the Annual&#38;nbsp;General Meeting of St Mary's Cathedral which takes place this Sunday 23 November 2008 at 12 Noon.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The report is a fairly large (800K) pdf file so has not been attached to this message. It can be downloaded by clicking on &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/final-report-2008-v2.pdf&#34;&#62;this link&#60;/a&#62; or going to &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/2008/11/06/cathedral-agm/&#34;&#62;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/2008/11/06/cathedral-agm/&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;For the last few weeks, green forms have been available in church. These are to allow everyone to update their contact details so that we can ensure that the Cathedral&#38;nbsp;Rolls are up to date. If you have not already filled one of these in and belong to the cathedral in any way, please do complete one. The forms can also be complete online here:&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#60;a href=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/contact/congregational-roll-form/&#34;&#62;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/contact/congregational-roll-form/&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Once again, this weekend is going to be quite&#38;nbsp; a busy one. It is the Feast of Christ the King and the 1030 service on Sunday morning will include a Baptism. In the evening there is a special Choral Evensong. It is our custom for the choir to have a rousing sing on this, the last Sunday of the Church year and this year will be no exception. Popular choral music including Zadok the Priest will be sung during this service, at which we will be joined by friends from around the diocese. This is by way of celebrating the 10th anniversary of Bishop Idris's consecration as Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;After Evensong, there will be a Cathedral Ceilidh with dancing to the Jiggers Ceilidh Band. No tickets are required for this one - it is open to all. (If you know others who would enjoy the evening, do encourage them to come).&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;I hope to see you there!&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Best regards&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;KELVIN&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;PS - A more general mailing of news will follow in due course, hopefully sometime next week.&#60;/p&#62;

		 <description>

        &#60;div id=&#34;doc-contents&#34;&#62;&#60;input type=&#34;image&#34; src=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/wp-content/themes/mimbo2.2/images/header3.jpg&#34; alt=&#34;St Mary's Cathedral - open, inclusive, welcoming&#34; /&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;h2&#62;From the Provost&#60;/h2&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Dear &#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        You'll find the St Mary's news for September below. The last month or so has been an exciting time for us as a congregation. My personal thanks to all those who helped to make the special events that we have had such a success. The visit of Gene Robinson will be remembered by many for a long time and has resulted in new members being added to the congregation. More recently, the weekend celebrating 100 years of St Mary's being a Cathedral was wonderful - great music and a great deal of good will.&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        St Mary's is a good place to be at the moment. I hope you find the news below helpful.&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;With best regards&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;KELVIN&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;hr /&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;&#60;b&#62;&#60;font size=&#34;2&#34;&#62;Website Additions&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;/font&#62;&#60;/b&#62;&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The website for St Mary's can be found at&#38;nbsp; &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/&#34; target=&#34;_blank&#34;&#62;www.thecathedral.org.uk&#60;/a&#62;&#60;wbr&#62;&#60;/wbr&#62;.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;A regular update of what is going on in the Provost's head can be found on his blog at &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.thurible.net/&#34;&#62;www.thurible.net&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Preaching - Listen (and See!) Again&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Most of the recent sermons at St Mary's have been recorded on video and are now available on the website at&#38;nbsp; &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/spirituality/preaching&#34; target=&#34;_blank&#34;&#62;http://www.thecathedral.org.&#60;wbr&#62;&#60;/wbr&#62;uk/spirituality/preaching&#60;/a&#62;. For those who do not have broadband access, some of these are also available in audio format. Many thanks to all those who contributed financially to the appeal made at the start of August for money to develop the web ministry at St Mary's. The addition of video to the site has been a direct result of the money given.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;If your web browser is not allowing you to see the video or hear the audio, it may be that you need to reinstall a recent version of Adobe Flash Player which can be downloaded from the &#60;a id=&#34;k2ji&#34; href=&#34;http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&#34; title=&#34;Adobe website&#34;&#62;Adobe website&#60;/a&#62; &#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The Provost's sermons are also available on his blog where comments and discussion are welcome.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;The Rt Rev Gene Robinson&#60;/h3&#62;
        Bishop Gene Robinson visited a packed St Mary's at the start of August. There was considerable interest from the media which produced universally positive comment about the visit in the press and a brief clip on BBC television news. Attached to this e-mail is an article which the Provost wrote for the Scotsman about the visit which was published the previous day.&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        The sermon that Bishop Gene preached can be seen on the Cathedral website here:&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;a id=&#34;x3ls&#34; href=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/2008/08/03/the-rt-rev-gene-robinson-wrestling-and-picnics-2/&#34; title=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/2008/08/03/the-rt-rev-gene-robinson-wrestling-and-picnics-2/&#34;&#62;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/2008/08/03/the-rt-rev-gene-robinson-wrestling-and-picnics-2/&#60;/a&#62; &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        The weekend of Bishop Gene's visit was a particularly busy one as it also saw the first blessing in St Mary's of a couple entering a Civil Partnership. Many thanks to all those who helped make this service a success including servers and the members of the choir who went the extra mile by agreeing to sing during their well earned summer break.&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Lambeth Reflections from Bishop Idris&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#38;ldquo;In one sense the Anglican Communion is dead,&#38;rdquo; Bishop Idris told the September meeting of Diocesan Council in his report on the Lambeth Conference.
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;ldquo;By this I mean that what we have now, and shall have in the future will be very different from concepts of communion derived trom earlier decades,&#38;rdquo; he explained. &#38;ldquo;After death comes resurrection, so I am anticipating that a new way of relating across and within the Communion is needed and is likely to begin to emerge in the next few years. Most of us agreed that the idea of a &#38;lsquo;quick fix&#38;rsquo; - though it still appealed to others - is not a realistic expectation. What is required in return is a large measure of patience and also the courage to continue to layout where we feel the communion should be going. Strong and contrary opinions will be voiced - but we hope with a degree of respect and courtesy.&#38;rdquo; &#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The full text of Bishop Idris's comments are available on the Diocesan Website here:&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#60;a id=&#34;w13k&#34; href=&#34;http://www.glasgow.anglican.org/index.php/news/entry/bishops_reflections_on_lambeth/&#34; title=&#34;http://www.glasgow.anglican.org/index.php/news/entry/bishops_reflections_on_lambeth/&#34;&#62;http://www.glasgow.anglican.org/index.php/news/entry/bishops_reflections_on_lambeth/&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Homecoming weekend&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Many thanks to all those who participated in the St Mary's Homecoming Weekend to mark 100 years since St Mary's became the Cathedral church of the diocese. Musicians were particularly busy with an excellent concert on the Saturday evening and full choral services on the Sunday. Choral Evensong was sung in the presence of the Bishop and members of the Cathedral Chapter. The Cathedral Chapter is made up of the Bishop, the Dean and the Provost and 8 members of the clergy who are alternately nominated by the Bishop and the Clergy of the diocese. The Chapter was constituted 100 years ago and it is this event which we have been celebrating. Chapter members are also known as the Canons of the Cathedral.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The next diocesan service will be a special Choral Evensong to mark 10 years since Bishop Idris was consecrated as the Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway. This will take place on 23 November 2008 at 6.30 pm.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Journey in Faith&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;It is hoped that St Mary's will begin to host Journey in&#38;nbsp;Faith courses in the autumn though no dates have yet been set.&#38;nbsp;These are courses in basic Christian education which are offered by the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway. It is expected that an initial basic six week course will take place, possibly on a Wednesday evening. Final arrangements are still to be put in place. If you are interested, please e-mail Alistair Fulton, the office manager, and further details will be sent out when definite arrangements have been made.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Stations of Grace - All Saints and All Souls&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The first weekend in November is looking as though it will be a very exciting one. For three days, the Cathedral will be open and there will be displays which have been commissioned by each of the local churches in the West End ACTS&#38;nbsp;group. Each church has been asked to commission and artist to install a &#38;quot;Station of Grace&#38;quot;.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;On the Saturday during the day, the Rev Richard Coles will be leading a workshop on the themes arising out of our celebration of All&#38;nbsp;Saints and All&#38;nbsp;Souls called &#38;quot;The Best of Times, the Worst of Times&#38;quot;. This would be a good introduction to this important celebration for anyone who has joined the congregation who does not have an Anglican background or for anyone wanting to think about the themes of life and death that are emphasised at this time of year. Richard Coles is and Anglican priest based in London who regularly broadcasts on BBC&#38;nbsp;Radio and Television about arts and religious topics. Before being ordained he was a musician, and lists one of his greatest moments as having a number one hit record. (He was one half of the &#60;i&#62;Communards&#60;/i&#62;).&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;On the Saturday evening, there will be a Big Sing led by John&#38;nbsp;Bell and James MacMillan.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;On the Sunday, we will celebrate All&#38;nbsp;Saints in the morning with the Rev Richard Coles as the preacher. In the evening, there will be the usual Sung Requiem for All Souls. This year it is hoped that the musical setting will be the Rutter Requiem.&#60;/p&#62;

            &#60;li&#62;&#60;b&#62;Jesus and Other Faiths&#60;/b&#62; &#38;mdash; Thursday, September 25, 2008 &#38;mdash;10:30-3:00 - A study day in the &#38;ldquo;Christianity and Scotland&#38;rsquo;s Other Faiths&#38;rdquo; series to be held in Scottish Churches&#38;rsquo; House, Dunblane, led by the Convener of CAIRS, Sr Isabel Smyth, and Inter Faith Education Officer, Andrew Sarle. What can we learn from reflecting on Jesus as a rabbi, prophet, guru and brother of the Buddha? Many recent Buddhist writings have pictured Jesus as an enlightened teacher. Some Hindus elevate the divine status of Jesus to  that of an &#38;quot;avatar&#38;quot; (a &#38;lsquo;descent&#38;rsquo; of God). Muslims have long claimed that Jesus was really a prophet of Islam, calling all people to submission to God. And Jews have always claimed Jesus as a Jew, albeit a wayward one.         &#60;h2&#62;From the Provost&#60;/h2&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Dear &#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        You'll find the St Mary's news for September below. The last month or so has been an exciting time for us as a congregation. My personal thanks to all those who helped to make the special events that we have had such a success. The visit of Gene Robinson will be remembered by many for a long time and has resulted in new members being added to the congregation. More recently, the weekend celebrating 100 years of St Mary's being a Cathedral was wonderful - great music and a great deal of good will.&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        St Mary's is a good place to be at the moment. I hope you find the news below helpful.&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;With best regards&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;KELVIN&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;hr /&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;&#60;b&#62;&#60;font size=&#34;2&#34;&#62;Website Additions&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;/font&#62;&#60;/b&#62;&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The website for St Mary's can be found at&#38;nbsp; &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/&#34; target=&#34;_blank&#34;&#62;www.thecathedral.org.uk&#60;/a&#62;&#60;wbr&#62;&#60;/wbr&#62;.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;A regular update of what is going on in the Provost's head can be found on his blog at &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.thurible.net/&#34;&#62;www.thurible.net&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Preaching - Listen (and See!) Again&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Most of the recent sermons at St Mary's have been recorded on video and are now available on the website at&#38;nbsp; &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/spirituality/preaching&#34; target=&#34;_blank&#34;&#62;http://www.thecathedral.org.&#60;wbr&#62;&#60;/wbr&#62;uk/spirituality/preaching&#60;/a&#62;. For those who do not have broadband access, some of these are also available in audio format. Many thanks to all those who contributed financially to the appeal made at the start of August for money to develop the web ministry at St Mary's. The addition of video to the site has been a direct result of the money given.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;If your web browser is not allowing you to see the video or hear the audio, it may be that you need to reinstall a recent version of Adobe Flash Player which can be downloaded from the &#60;a id=&#34;k2ji&#34; href=&#34;http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&#34; title=&#34;Adobe website&#34;&#62;Adobe website&#60;/a&#62; &#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The Provost's sermons are also available on his blog where comments and discussion are welcome.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;The Rt Rev Gene Robinson&#60;/h3&#62;
        Bishop Gene Robinson visited a packed St Mary's at the start of August. There was considerable interest from the media which produced universally positive comment about the visit in the press and a brief clip on BBC television news. Attached to this e-mail is an article which the Provost wrote for the Scotsman about the visit which was published the previous day.&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        The sermon that Bishop Gene preached can be seen on the Cathedral website here:&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;a id=&#34;x3ls&#34; href=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/2008/08/03/the-rt-rev-gene-robinson-wrestling-and-picnics-2/&#34; title=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/2008/08/03/the-rt-rev-gene-robinson-wrestling-and-picnics-2/&#34;&#62;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/2008/08/03/the-rt-rev-gene-robinson-wrestling-and-picnics-2/&#60;/a&#62; &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        The weekend of Bishop Gene's visit was a particularly busy one as it also saw the first blessing in St Mary's of a couple entering a Civil Partnership. Many thanks to all those who helped make this service a success including servers and the members of the choir who went the extra mile by agreeing to sing during their well earned summer break.&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Lambeth Reflections from Bishop Idris&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#38;ldquo;In one sense the Anglican Communion is dead,&#38;rdquo; Bishop Idris told the September meeting of Diocesan Council in his report on the Lambeth Conference.
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;ldquo;By this I mean that what we have now, and shall have in the future will be very different from concepts of communion derived trom earlier decades,&#38;rdquo; he explained. &#38;ldquo;After death comes resurrection, so I am anticipating that a new way of relating across and within the Communion is needed and is likely to begin to emerge in the next few years. Most of us agreed that the idea of a &#38;lsquo;quick fix&#38;rsquo; - though it still appealed to others - is not a realistic expectation. What is required in return is a large measure of patience and also the courage to continue to layout where we feel the communion should be going. Strong and contrary opinions will be voiced - but we hope with a degree of respect and courtesy.&#38;rdquo; &#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The full text of Bishop Idris's comments are available on the Diocesan Website here:&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#60;a id=&#34;w13k&#34; href=&#34;http://www.glasgow.anglican.org/index.php/news/entry/bishops_reflections_on_lambeth/&#34; title=&#34;http://www.glasgow.anglican.org/index.php/news/entry/bishops_reflections_on_lambeth/&#34;&#62;http://www.glasgow.anglican.org/index.php/news/entry/bishops_reflections_on_lambeth/&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Homecoming weekend&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Many thanks to all those who participated in the St Mary's Homecoming Weekend to mark 100 years since St Mary's became the Cathedral church of the diocese. Musicians were particularly busy with an excellent concert on the Saturday evening and full choral services on the Sunday. Choral Evensong was sung in the presence of the Bishop and members of the Cathedral Chapter. The Cathedral Chapter is made up of the Bishop, the Dean and the Provost and 8 members of the clergy who are alternately nominated by the Bishop and the Clergy of the diocese. The Chapter was constituted 100 years ago and it is this event which we have been celebrating. Chapter members are also known as the Canons of the Cathedral.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The next diocesan service will be a special Choral Evensong to mark 10 years since Bishop Idris was consecrated as the Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway. This will take place on 23 November 2008 at 6.30 pm.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Journey in Faith&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;It is hoped that St Mary's will begin to host Journey in&#38;nbsp;Faith courses in the autumn though no dates have yet been set.&#38;nbsp;These are courses in basic Christian education which are offered by the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway. It is expected that an initial basic six week course will take place, possibly on a Wednesday evening. Final arrangements are still to be put in place. If you are interested, please e-mail Alistair Fulton, the office manager, and further details will be sent out when definite arrangements have been made.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Stations of Grace - All Saints and All Souls&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The first weekend in November is looking as though it will be a very exciting one. For three days, the Cathedral will be open and there will be displays which have been commissioned by each of the local churches in the West End ACTS&#38;nbsp;group. Each church has been asked to commission and artist to install a &#38;quot;Station of Grace&#38;quot;.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;On the Saturday during the day, the Rev Richard Coles will be leading a workshop on the themes arising out of our celebration of All&#38;nbsp;Saints and All&#38;nbsp;Souls called &#38;quot;The Best of Times, the Worst of Times&#38;quot;. This would be a good introduction to this important celebration for anyone who has joined the congregation who does not have an Anglican background or for anyone wanting to think about the themes of life and death that are emphasised at this time of year. Richard Coles is and Anglican priest based in London who regularly broadcasts on BBC&#38;nbsp;Radio and Television about arts and religious topics. Before being ordained he was a musician, and lists one of his greatest moments as having a number one hit record. (He was one half of the &#60;i&#62;Communards&#60;/i&#62;).&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;On the Saturday evening, there will be a Big Sing led by John&#38;nbsp;Bell and James MacMillan.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;On the Sunday, we will celebrate All&#38;nbsp;Saints in the morning with the Rev Richard Coles as the preacher. In the evening, there will be the usual Sung Requiem for All Souls. This year it is hoped that the musical setting will be the Rutter Requiem.&#60;/p&#62;

            &#60;li&#62;&#60;b&#62;Jesus and Other Faiths&#60;/b&#62; &#38;mdash; Thursday, September 25, 2008 &#38;mdash;10:30-3:00 - A study day in the &#38;ldquo;Christianity and Scotland&#38;rsquo;s Other Faiths&#38;rdquo; series to be held in Scottish Churches&#38;rsquo; House, Dunblane, led by the Convener of CAIRS, Sr Isabel Smyth, and Inter Faith Education Officer, Andrew Sarle. What can we learn from reflecting on Jesus as a rabbi, prophet, guru and brother of the Buddha? Many recent Buddhist writings have pictured Jesus as an enlightened teacher. Some Hindus elevate the divine status of Jesus to  that of an &#38;quot;avatar&#38;quot; (a &#38;lsquo;descent&#38;rsquo; of God). Muslims have long claimed that Jesus was really a prophet of Islam, calling all people to submission to God. And Jews have always claimed Jesus as a Jew, albeit a wayward one.         &#60;div id=&#34;doc-contents&#34;&#62;&#60;input type=&#34;image&#34; src=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/wp-content/themes/mimbo2.2/images/header3.jpg&#34; alt=&#34;St Mary's Cathedral - open, inclusive, welcoming&#34; /&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;h2&#62;From the Provost&#60;/h2&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Dear &#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        You'll find the St Mary's news for September below. The last month or so has been an exciting time for us as a congregation. My personal thanks to all those who helped to make the special events that we have had such a success. The visit of Gene Robinson will be remembered by many for a long time and has resulted in new members being added to the congregation. More recently, the weekend celebrating 100 years of St Mary's being a Cathedral was wonderful - great music and a great deal of good will.&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        St Mary's is a good place to be at the moment. I hope you find the news below helpful.&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;With best regards&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;KELVIN&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;hr /&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;&#60;b&#62;&#60;font size=&#34;2&#34;&#62;Website Additions&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;/font&#62;&#60;/b&#62;&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The website for St Mary's can be found at&#38;nbsp; &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/&#34; target=&#34;_blank&#34;&#62;www.thecathedral.org.uk&#60;/a&#62;&#60;wbr&#62;&#60;/wbr&#62;.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;A regular update of what is going on in the Provost's head can be found on his blog at &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.thurible.net/&#34;&#62;www.thurible.net&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Preaching - Listen (and See!) Again&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Most of the recent sermons at St Mary's have been recorded on video and are now available on the website at&#38;nbsp; &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/spirituality/preaching&#34; target=&#34;_blank&#34;&#62;http://www.thecathedral.org.&#60;wbr&#62;&#60;/wbr&#62;uk/spirituality/preaching&#60;/a&#62;. For those who do not have broadband access, some of these are also available in audio format. Many thanks to all those who contributed financially to the appeal made at the start of August for money to develop the web ministry at St Mary's. The addition of video to the site has been a direct result of the money given.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;If your web browser is not allowing you to see the video or hear the audio, it may be that you need to reinstall a recent version of Adobe Flash Player which can be downloaded from the &#60;a id=&#34;k2ji&#34; href=&#34;http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&#34; title=&#34;Adobe website&#34;&#62;Adobe website&#60;/a&#62; &#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The Provost's sermons are also available on his blog where comments and discussion are welcome.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;The Rt Rev Gene Robinson&#60;/h3&#62;
        Bishop Gene Robinson visited a packed St Mary's at the start of August. There was considerable interest from the media which produced universally positive comment about the visit in the press and a brief clip on BBC television news. Attached to this e-mail is an article which the Provost wrote for the Scotsman about the visit which was published the previous day.&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        The sermon that Bishop Gene preached can be seen on the Cathedral website here:&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;a id=&#34;x3ls&#34; href=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/2008/08/03/the-rt-rev-gene-robinson-wrestling-and-picnics-2/&#34; title=&#34;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/2008/08/03/the-rt-rev-gene-robinson-wrestling-and-picnics-2/&#34;&#62;http://www.thecathedral.org.uk/2008/08/03/the-rt-rev-gene-robinson-wrestling-and-picnics-2/&#60;/a&#62; &#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;br /&#62;
        The weekend of Bishop Gene's visit was a particularly busy one as it also saw the first blessing in St Mary's of a couple entering a Civil Partnership. Many thanks to all those who helped make this service a success including servers and the members of the choir who went the extra mile by agreeing to sing during their well earned summer break.&#60;br /&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Lambeth Reflections from Bishop Idris&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#38;ldquo;In one sense the Anglican Communion is dead,&#38;rdquo; Bishop Idris told the September meeting of Diocesan Council in his report on the Lambeth Conference.
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;ldquo;By this I mean that what we have now, and shall have in the future will be very different from concepts of communion derived trom earlier decades,&#38;rdquo; he explained. &#38;ldquo;After death comes resurrection, so I am anticipating that a new way of relating across and within the Communion is needed and is likely to begin to emerge in the next few years. Most of us agreed that the idea of a &#38;lsquo;quick fix&#38;rsquo; - though it still appealed to others - is not a realistic expectation. What is required in return is a large measure of patience and also the courage to continue to layout where we feel the communion should be going. Strong and contrary opinions will be voiced - but we hope with a degree of respect and courtesy.&#38;rdquo; &#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The full text of Bishop Idris's comments are available on the Diocesan Website here:&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#60;a id=&#34;w13k&#34; href=&#34;http://www.glasgow.anglican.org/index.php/news/entry/bishops_reflections_on_lambeth/&#34; title=&#34;http://www.glasgow.anglican.org/index.php/news/entry/bishops_reflections_on_lambeth/&#34;&#62;http://www.glasgow.anglican.org/index.php/news/entry/bishops_reflections_on_lambeth/&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Homecoming weekend&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;Many thanks to all those who participated in the St Mary's Homecoming Weekend to mark 100 years since St Mary's became the Cathedral church of the diocese. Musicians were particularly busy with an excellent concert on the Saturday evening and full choral services on the Sunday. Choral Evensong was sung in the presence of the Bishop and members of the Cathedral Chapter. The Cathedral Chapter is made up of the Bishop, the Dean and the Provost and 8 members of the clergy who are alternately nominated by the Bishop and the Clergy of the diocese. The Chapter was constituted 100 years ago and it is this event which we have been celebrating. Chapter members are also known as the Canons of the Cathedral.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The next diocesan service will be a special Choral Evensong to mark 10 years since Bishop Idris was consecrated as the Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway. This will take place on 23 November 2008 at 6.30 pm.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Journey in Faith&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;It is hoped that St Mary's will begin to host Journey in&#38;nbsp;Faith courses in the autumn though no dates have yet been set.&#38;nbsp;These are courses in basic Christian education which are offered by the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway. It is expected that an initial basic six week course will take place, possibly on a Wednesday evening. Final arrangements are still to be put in place. If you are interested, please e-mail Alistair Fulton, the office manager, and further details will be sent out when definite arrangements have been made.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;h3&#62;Stations of Grace - All Saints and All Souls&#60;/h3&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;The first weekend in November is looking as though it will be a very exciting one. For three days, the Cathedral will be open and there will be displays which have been commissioned by each of the local churches in the West End ACTS&#38;nbsp;group. Each church has been asked to commission and artist to install a &#38;quot;Station of Grace&#38;quot;.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;On the Saturday during the day, the Rev Richard Coles will be leading a workshop on the themes arising out of our celebration of All&#38;nbsp;Saints and All&#38;nbsp;Souls called &#38;quot;The Best of Times, the Worst of Times&#38;quot;. This would be a good introduction to this important celebration for anyone who has joined the congregation who does not have an Anglican background or for anyone wanting to think about the themes of life and death that are emphasised at this time of year. Richard Coles is and Anglican priest based in London who regularly broadcasts on BBC&#38;nbsp;Radio and Television about arts and religious topics. Before being ordained he was a musician, and lists one of his greatest moments as having a number one hit record. (He was one half of the &#60;i&#62;Communards&#60;/i&#62;).&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;On the Saturday evening, there will be a Big Sing led by John&#38;nbsp;Bell and James MacMillan.&#60;/p&#62;
        &#60;p&#62;On the Sunday, we will celebrate All&#38;nbsp;Saints in the morning with the Rev Richard Coles as the preacher. In the evening, there will be the usual Sung Requiem for All Souls. This year it is hoped that the musical setting will be the Rutter Requiem.&#60;/p&#62;

            &#60;li&#62;&#60;b&#62;Jesus and Other Faiths&#60;/b&#62; &#38;mdash; Thursday, September 25, 2008 &#38;mdash;10:30-3:00 - A study day in the &#38;ldquo;Christianity and Scotland&#38;rsquo;s Other Faiths&#38;rdquo; series to be held in Scottish Churches&#38;rsquo; House, Dunblane, led by the Convener of CAIRS, Sr Isabel Smyth, and Inter Faith Education Officer, Andrew Sarle. What can we learn from reflecting on Jesus as a rabbi, prophet, guru and brother of the Buddha? Many recent Buddhist writings have pictured Jesus as an enlightened teacher. Some Hindus elevate the divine status of Jesus to that of an &#38;quot;avatar&#38;quot; (a &#38;lsquo;descent&#38;rsquo; of God). Muslims have long claimed that Jesus was really a prophet of Islam, calling all people to submission to God. And Jews have always claimed Jesus as a Jew, albeit a wayward one.
